It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we mourn the passing of our fellow Birmingham citizen, Hillman Neighborhood President and Birmingham Land Bank Authority board member, Gwendolyn Bates Calhoun. Ms. Calhoun passed away after an illness on January 15, 2020.

It was an honor getting to know and work with Ms. Calhoun over the last three years. Throughout the last year, I was able visit with her at her home in the Hillman Neighborhood. I could see the love and care that she had for her community. Over the last few years, she endeavored to get out and serve her fellow citizens of Birmingham no matter what stood in her way. We were blessed that she was able to join the Land Bank staff and fellow board members in Atlanta this past October for the Reclaiming Vacant Properties Conference. We had a wonderful time networking with like-minded practitioners from across the country and learning from each other.

Her commitment to this City is something that I know I will strive to emulate in my public service career and as a citizen of Birmingham.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all that were blessed to have her serve as a leader in working to improve Birmingham.
